Well, you're right.

AFAIK /usr/lib/oracle/xe/.../sqlplus is the only i386 sqlplus installed
on x86_64. Then... there must have been some other deviation from
standard setup that made i386 sqlplus be first one in PATH while
LD_LIBRARY_PATH was not set to i386 libs.
