I use Satellite rather than Spacewalk, so I'm not sure whether this will
work for you, but here are my steps:
1. On local system:
 a. change name in /etc/sysconfig/network
 b. change name on command line using 'hostname newname.example.com'
 c. if the system's name is in its /etc/hosts file, change it there, too

 d. issue 'service network restart'
2. Change DNS
3. Again on local system, rhn-profile-sync

I don't have to delete the system when I use that method.
