Some additional information:
A cname will also work. It does not have to be FQDN.
hostname cname
update /etc/hosts with the cname information.
This allows an easier migration from one spacewalk to another. ie. To a
hot standby (all relevant spacewalk data replicated with external DB).

yall were right! I just needed to follow the instructions at:
https://access.redhat.com/solutions/10809
https://fedorahosted.org/spacewalk/wiki/SpacewalkHostnameRename
and rename my spacewalk server with a FQDN.. everythings working now.
