Thanks for the reply.  Oddly enough.......I restarted Spacewalk and then sent 
a batch remote command to all my client to restart osad........since rhn_check 
was still working, an hour later everything was back to normal and everything 
has worked find since.  

I have patched 2 or 3 dozen RHEL 7 boxes since....behaviour is exactly the 
same.  After the post patching reboot, RHEL 7 clients won't connect to the 
jabber.  Restarting Spacewalk, then restarting Osad on the clients "fixes" it.
