Actually, once I changed from qcow to qcow2 everything worked fine.  So 
apparently there are problems with using the qcow format.  You guys might 
want to diagnose and/or document this.  Or just say that qcow is not a 
supported format.

Incidentally, my usage of qcow instead of qcow2 was a typo on my part...
