What do these kernel error messages mean?

I have many of these in my syslog:

Oct 5 03:40:26 bach kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
   Oct 5 03:40:26 bach kernel: 02:00: rw=0, want=10, limit=4
Oct 5 03:40:26 bach kernel: Directory sread (sector 0x13) failed
Oct 5 03:40:26 bach kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
   Oct 5 03:40:26 bach kernel: 02:00: rw=0, want=10, limit=4
Oct 5 03:40:26 bach kernel: Directory sread (sector 0x13) failed

How can I find out what device are they referring to and what are they
trying to tell me? Have I lost data?

They seem to be occurring during backups, but my backup files test OK.
My backup device is a LVM volume that is made up of two IDE disks
(160GB and 80GB).

Thanks.
