Try this:

If you have shared folders on 192.168.0.254 for user xyz, run this:

# smbclient -L 192.168.0.1 -U xyz
then, enter his password.  See if it lists the shared folder(s).

On my machine, if I run 

# smbclient -L mywindows

and hit Enter, the shared folder displays 
"Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED",

if I run 
# smbclient -L mywindows -U myusername
and enter my password, it displays all shared folders for me.

But, I have WinNT, not Win2000. Good luck!
