Cups printing problems

I tried to print with cups software on a RH linux 7.3 box.

1) I use the cups-1.1.14-15 distribution that comes with the CD

2) I make sure the lpd daemon is stopped

3) Make sure that lprng (or lpr) is not installed

[dan001 TICS1 dan001]$ rpm -qa | grep lpr
[dan001 TICS1 dan001]$ ....... nothing there!

3) I log on to http://localhost:631 and set up my printer (epson stylus photo 820)
everything goes without a hitch.......

4) It prints a lovely test page.....

And that is where the fun stops:

Trying to print a file I get the following:

[dan001 TICS1 dan001]$ lpr text
Status Information:
sending job 'dan001 TICS1+260' to tics1_esp820 localhost
connecting to 'localhost', attempt 1
cannot open connection to localhost - No such file or directory
Make sure the remote host supports the LPD protocol
and accepts connections from this host and from non-privileged (>1023) ports
[dan001 TICS1 dan001]$

When I do lpstat .........

[dan001 TICS1 dan001]$ lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: tics1_esp820
Printer 'tics1_esp820 localhost' - cannot open connection - No such file or directory

[dan001 TICS1 dan001]$

Local host appeas to be there ......

[dan001 TICS1 dan001]$ ping localhost

[dan001 TICS1 dan001]$

The printers.conf file looks OK
[root TICS1 cups]# cat /etc/cups/printers.conf
# Printer configuration file for CUPS v1.1.14
# Written by cupsd on Sat 19 Oct 2002 11:18:05 PM GMT

DeviceURI epson:/dev/lp0

JobSheets none none

</Printer>
[root TICS1 cups]#

So does the httpd.conf ---- I want list it here ----- it is long

I find this same question on other mailing list..... it is asked quite frequently but
there is never an answer in the thread.......Is there something stupid that I forgot.

Any Ideas what I could try? It is true that the system does not have a file or directory
called 'tics1_esp820 localhost' but this is the name I supplied to the printer......what
went wrong?

Thanks

Dan shapira (dabbles in linux but not an expert)
