Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to help.

In the meantime I've installed the latest Fedora Server release. While the
colors on HDMI out are fine and non-corrupted (as opposed to Arch, another bug?),
I'm observing the same freezing behavior. Fedora ships the same qemu version
(2.4.1) and kernel 4.2.5.
