In that case, here's the build that I'm currently considering for my new system build.

AMD FX-8350
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 R5

Passthru Graphics: EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti SC 02G-P4-3753-KR
Host Graphics: EVGA GeForce GT 720 01G-P3-2722-KR

AMD FX CPUs are old but mostly already patched to work right.
AMD FM2 A/CPUs are often broken in terms of IOMMU, but there may be workarounds available.
Modern Intel CPUs(skylake) are broken for now, read about it in a neighborhood thread.
4xxx intel CPUs mostly show a stable working setup.
In terms of performance i won't flame a holy war about comparing 2011 bulldozer to 2014 haswell or whatever.
Generally, the more cores you can pin to the VM, the less latency problems you have.

Other than cost, are there any large differences between AMD and Intel?

Thanks,
