[vfio-users] NIC driver

I am working on a project in which we have a driver that does the necessary register_netdev() stuff at the kernel level. If I wanted to take advantage of the vfio framework .. how would the device get registered as a network device (with the kernel) if I have to unbind my driver to bind vfio-pci? Very new to vfio, so apologies in advance if my understanding is way off the mark.
