That issue comes from qemu-kvm, not from libvirt or virtinst. qemu-kvm 0.12.x 
is affected by a bug when trying to install an XP/2003 guest (see here: 
http://bugs.debian.org/588739). A patch (backported to 0.12.x stable branch) 
to fix that issue has been introduced in Debian with qemu-kvm 0.12.5+dfsg-2.

You can use qemu-kvm 0.12.5+dfsg-3 from Squeeze, it will fix the issue.
