I'm using CentOS 5.5 x86_64 and looking at the virt-manager man page from 
python-virtinst-0.400.3-9.el5_5.1. It is a statement in the man page's 
description of the --mac option. If one creates a VM and defaults the MAC 
address, it does indeed get set to 52:54:00:xx:xx:xx.
