UN agencies are prioritising the health and safety of seafarers in current discussions. This increased importance has been highlighted by ILO Director General Guy Ryder’s recent affirmation that “forcing exhausted seafarers to continue working more than four months beyond the end of their contract is unacceptable” as it “jeopardizes their health and endangers maritime safety” and the UN Secretary General António Guterres’ statement that seafarers “deserve far greater support at any time”, not just during the COVID-19 crisis.
