Whoops.  Someone pointed out to me that the bug URL I provided 
was incorrect.  There were 2 different bugs I was tracking 
closely upstream that are very highly discussed topics, and I 
pasted the wrong URL of the two.  The proper bug URL for tracking 
Radeon MergedFB support is:

Just to further clarify things, MergedFB support for Radeon was 
developed by Alex Deucher, the person who filed the above 
enhancement request upstream and attached the patch which adds 
support for merged fb.  The original patch was to add this 
support to 4.3.0, however this development effort was submitted 
to XFree86.org far to late in the development cycle, and so it 
does not appear in the XFree86 4.4.0 release either.

Currently, the only way to get mergedfb support for Radeon, is to 
either grab a copy of the latest binary snapshot DRI project 
drivers from the head of DRI-CVS, or to try to apply the latest 
patch from the above bug report on top of XFree86 and rebuild.
