[augeas-devel] Quick tour example not working on Gentoo linux

It may depend on how you installed augeas.

Augeas is installed in /usr/local by "make install".

But augtool will search for lenses in /usr/share.

So you can try augtool with -I /usr/local/share/augeas/lenses
