Oh, no, not at all.  It turned out that the issue I was having was
with aptitude rather than dpkg, that's all.

I'm extremely happy with Augeas; I've been thinking for years now
that there has to be a better way to manage config files, because
every time Debian upgrades something my config files get further and
further behind or I have to spend a bunch of timing fixing them
using diffs.  Augeas seems like The Right Thing(tm), so I'm very
happy to have found it (through puppet, fwiw).
