well... err funny...

i just tried mine and found out that dri can stay enabled (default
config), but then running glsnake from the xscreensaver package crashes
the server with following backtrace:

i dont have any problem leaving dri running, but i disabled the glx
option (as seen in some nvidia-driver install guides IIRC).
i didnt try disabling only dri at the moment....
The machine is AlphaPC164SX w/512Mb aha2940u scsi 2

seems to be somehow machine-dependant what works and what not...???
