Some tips.
Make sure that you have speach-dispatcher installed.
There should be an rpm for that.
You need to modprobe the softsynth module and start speechd_up.
This is what gets things started on my fedora 3 box.
/usr/local/bin/speech-dispatcher -d
sleep 10
modprobe speakup_sftsyn

/usr/local/bin/speechd_up -d
I suggest that you set up Espeak as the synthesizer, but flite/festival
can work too. there is an espeak package for fedora.
