Debian Stretch: how to get spoken login prompt and retrieve tty1

[Linux for blind general discussion]

I work in both graphical and console.  I just want the gui I originally 
logged into to still work right.  I did use the startx approach when I 
was running Arch Linux; that might be fine here, but I don't know how to 
do that in Debian either, yet.
