Tim here again.  You can tell mplayer to shut up with any messages
with either

  mplayer --msglevel=all=-1 myfile.mp3

or set the environment variable MPLAYER_VERBOSE to a ridiculously
high (low?) negative number (which can be done in your .bashrc so
it's always set):

  $ export MPLAYER_VERBOSE=-99
  $ mplayer myfile.mp3
