I just installed the font package again, and it doesn't crash anymore. See my
comment on bug 450709 re: mkfontdir/mkfontscale issues.
So in order to test this I guess you would have to install and old version of
xorg-x11-fonts-Type1 that contained the IBM fonts with non-open source licenses
and the update to the current version.
