The 'linux.bak' tag in lilo.conf is put there by yum, not by the kernel
RPM IIRC. Since you are now installing by hand and not using yum,
that's why you got the screwy behaviour in the lilo.conf file. By the
way, since it wiped out the old kernel from boot, it sounds like you
upgraded the kernel RPM instead of installing it. Usually (always?)
you'll want to install (-i flag in RPM) a kernel package so that you
don't blow away your old kernel. When using yum this is the default
behaviour...

I believe that the kernel packages do behave exactly as the old RH
kernel updates did (at least as far as I can tell).

I would definatley lean towards yum for this - it'll make your life much
easier. Although it sounds from the begining of your message that you
are having problems with yum on RH8...?
