A question on apt-get relative to kernel versions

yep, apt-get from fedora.us won't upgrade the kernel.  you should do:

apt-get install kernel#2.4.20-31.9

or kernel-smp, kernel-bigmem, etc.  it won't make the new kernel the 
default either.  edit your boot loader config files to make that happen.
