Hello all,
I have posted this problem on the Shrike list but it looks like that
list is being checked scarcely, so I would like to repeat the problem I
have here.
Recently I have come up with rather annoying problem with GDM: it won't
start.
At the moment when GDM starts, the NVIDIA driver loads successfully (its
splash screen shows) and then I get blank (black) screen with a mouse
cursor "X".
Here's the output from /var/log/gdm:
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.
Here's the output from "ps -ef | grep dm":
ps -ef | grep dm
root 4779 1 0 19:52 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/gdm-binary
-nodaemon

root 4867 4864 0 19:52 ? 00:00:00 /usr/libexec/gdmopen
-l /bin/sh
-c /usr/bin/dialog --yesno '??згледа да ??е ??к?? ??е??ве?? ве??

mentioned earlier; translation: 'It looks like that X has been already
up on screen :0. Should I try the other screen number? If no, should I
try running on the same screen again?)
root 6245 5279 0 20:07 pts/1 00:00:00 grep dm
What seems to be the problem? I haven't been able to find a solution on
the Internet, but confirmed that the same problem occured definitely
many times earlier. In fact, Red Hat issued an errata update to GDM on
its supported product line that adressed this issue, among several
others.
When I boot in init 3 and consequently order "startx" GNOME loads
without problems. Also KDM is working fine, so I guess that
XFree86.config and NVIDIA display driver are OK.
Note that gdm fails also when I run "gdm" manually while in runlevel 3.
The system is Red Hat 9 (Shrike).
Thank you.
