I've certainly come across this problem before. I have some x10 CDRW
discs which are not downward happy. If I want to burn to them, I have to
use the DVD writer as my CDRW is x8.

Unfortunately, there is no way around this problem that I've found - if
you want to use them, you need a drive over and/or above the rating of
the discs.
