I did an install of everything, and there are a lot of processes running by 
default that I do not need, and it takes time for each of these to start.  The 
linux security benchmark product at the center for internet security 
(www.cisecurity.com) has a lot of good ideas about what services to cut 
(although i am told the rpm -F method of updating suggested there is not good -- 
use yum instead).  By using chkconfig to disable unnecessary stuff, I cut my 
boot time by perhaps 70%.
