SMTPS disables SMTP ?

If you have *both* lines for SMTP and SMTPS, then you should be OK. Are you 
sure it's not listening? Can you "netstat -leanp" to check? Perhaps your 
mail client is just refusing to do unencrypted SMTP if it sees the 
encrypted option available?
