Removing packages

use yum.  
   "yum erase <package>" will do it all for you.
You might be surprised at exactly what effect dependencies will have on
that.  If something else depends upon the package being removed the
other will get removed as well.

The advantage of using yum over rpm is the automatic handling of
dependencies.
