How is one supposed to use the KDE4 desktop ?

He probably meant widescreen.  However, to answer the question, no...not
really.  1024x768 is a standard resolution for a 4:3 style monitor up to a
particular size (14" and 15" monitors come to mind).  You remember:

640x480
800x600
1024x768
1280x1024 (most 17" screens)
1600x1200 (19"/20")
