Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I mailed Ray Strode,  
its easy enough to add
in the init.d livesys script add
--number-of-tries=x
and
-Tx
To the line
plymouth ask-for-password --command="cryptsetup luksOpen $homedev  
EncHome"
