I've already tested it with GPS input (from a Windows Mobile phone connected by
USB, since I like having a complicated life...). It works very well. I used
gpsd.

We were just discussing the defaults. Actually I think when I wrote that doc,
navit would just throw its toys out of the pram by default if you ran it
without a GPS device connected, whereas now it runs but just complains a bit at
the console. So it's probably fine to leave the default.
