If you have X on your NFS server, fire up /usr/bin/ethereal and have a
quick look (just start a capture, perform the operation that fails, and
stop the capture).  You can then browse the network traffic and check
RPC error codes on the NFS/MOUNTD replies or perhaps DNS issues.

Try it!  It's not that difficult and is an invaluable debugging tool for
this type of problem.
