The problem diagnosis started as the 2.6 kernel has troubles with the 
mediacheck for discs verfied on an IDE CDROM drive. The mediacheck 
passed for another user on an scsi cdrom drive.

Adding the additional padding to the discs, loading the ide-scsi module 
or using the 2.4 kernel series seem to allow proper mediachecks to complete.

With disc 1 passing mediacheck, an assumption that mediacheck is working 
properly leads to the user thinking that discs other than disc 1 are bad 
burns. The discs actually are usable if you used the discs to install a 
system with. The mediacheck failure leads to attempting reburning the 
discs that were reported as failures.

Anyway, I hope that this discussion saves some people a few blank CDs if 
they happen to read this thread before cycling thru a lot of blanks.
