xsane hang?

That is not instant but at least it does not get stuck.

This was mostly a sanity check if you can get scanner responses or
not.  It looks like that you do so maybe xsane indeed behaves here
somewhat nasty?  The next test would be if you can get some picture
using 'scanimage'.
