ATA3 says that all subcommands of the SET FEATURES command are optional, though
as you say devices not implementing it will restrict what transfer modes can be
used.  As far as I'm aware PCMCIA and CF only support the earliest PIO modes, so
it's not surprising that such devices would not bother to implement the subcommand.

I'll give it a try once there's a Fedora kernel RPM with the patch.
