The ideal thing would be to munge the user management templates/scripts
on the SME side to push the right things into LDAP so the LDAP/samba
setup would work. And in some cases like squidguard or an email
server you might want an SME box to authenticate as a client.

If it could update the logins in LDAP, that could be replicated to
backup servers. However, if the box serving the home directories
is down you are dead anyway.
