The problem seems to be a video card incompatibility. How/where can I determine what type of video card these Digital PC 500 have, and how do I determine what version of Linux or what patch to load? Brainstorm suggestions gladly accepted.

If you can boot it into text (command line) mode, try running the command "lspci". It should list all of the hardware on your PCI/AGP/USB busses. You can usually find out the type of chipset on your video card by looking at the output. TIp: use "lspci | less" (the middle character is the pipe, it's the shift+\) so you can use the arrow keys to page up and down though the output instead of having it all flash by at once.
