[K12OSN] Installing Ubuntu kills machine

Here's a question that someone may have good ideas about before I go
in tomorrow and fight with my machine.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a fairly old but nice machine--dual
800MHz P5s, 1.75 gigs of RAM.

Everything works up to the point where it looks like X should come
up, but the monitor goes dead. This has happened before, so I pressed
Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a terminal. And then discovered that the keyboard
was dead.

As a doornail. Pressing Num Lock or Caps Lock doesn't even turn on
the lights on the keyboard, even though it did previously during the
install before everything went black.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Todd
