I had a the same problem particularly with sun java plugins.
What I did is I install jre rpm install from Sun then I create a symbolic
link of java plugins to firefox(or any browsers to that matter) plugin
directory.
for example:
$ ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_05/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/plugins
I use java 1.5.0 and firefox 1.0.8 on k12ltsp 4.4.1
