Ensure that you have USEMD5=yes in /etc/sysconfig/authconfig; this is
set by kickstart's auth --enablemd5 line.
MD5-based passwords look like this:
$1$h6SOogDr$jZPK48gOLAgayPYLN4gSr0
whereas classic "crypt" passwords like this:
9tJNsoIV/pjgQ
Both can be generated by openssl's passwd applet;
see "openssl passwd --help" for more info.
