Some more tips that might be useful:
  dmsetup vgmknodes: creates /dev/mapper directories entries for active devices
  vgmknodes: as above, plus /dev/<vg>/<lv> links
[Useful after switching to root device]

If it's read-only, vgscan/vgchange --ignorelockingfailure
