Hi,
Thanks for writing back. I've been working with V-Com in the
background on this. Strange and interesting problems.

So far the best clue has been that if I put SC7 into a text mode
instead of graphics, and then attempt to run the wizards for OS
installation or for partitioning, a message pops up about a 'missing
command interpreter'. I am currently waiting for a response from V-Com
about what command interpreter they would be expecting at this point,
but the emails I've received from them so far seem to indicate that some
OEM installations of Windows (in this case a new Compaq 3GHz laptop with
Win XP Pro on it) sometimes leave stuff out that would have been
installed if you used M$ disks.

V-Com has been pretty cool about helping. They haven't asked if I
was a paying customer, and I've been getting may one response a day, so
we're making headway, if a bit slowly.

Anyway, with Rick's idea to try booting from the SC7 disk I was able
to do the partitioning by hand and get Linux on the machine, so I'm in
no big pain at this point. I also got X set up for the same native
1280x800 resolution that the machine uses under Windows so the display
is just as sharp.

Now, if I could only get DMA working on the hard drive I'd be in no
pain at all... ;-)
