Thanks all for the suggestions.

For posterity the solution evolved as follows-:

Trying the suggestion of partitioning the hard disk with ext2 rather than
ext3 caused the format phase of installation to succeed. However,
installation progressed only up to the window "Setting up RPM
Transactions". At this point I received the dreaded signal 11 error.

Following the links to the Red Hat Installation Manual led to the solution.
Using  mem=64M in the boot: line!

I have read the wonderful page on this error and doesn't it give you the
"Tom Tits"! I had checked the memory with Memtest86 (and even returned 1
stick that had proved faulty).

I can now install, still on ext 3, but throttle back the memory.
