moving hard drive to new machine : can't get past grub

Yeah, you could. Boot with your install CD to rescue mode (put "linux
rescue" at the boot prompt). Let it mount your system on
/mnt/sysimage. Then pop out your CD and
chroot /mnt/sysimage
grub-install /dev/hda
exit
exit
Yes, exit twice - once to exit the chroot and once to reboot.
