Could be:

1.the the uw-imap you installed disabled plain text (LOGIN) attemps on 
non SSL connections.  Where/how did you install uw-imap?  (Hint: it's 
part of Fedora Extras now)

or

2.you're trying to use SSL without configuring saslauthd.
