try adding root=/dev/hda2 in the lilo.conf or grub.conf whichever you are using.

See what filesystem you are using by doing cat /etc/fstab.
The kernel compiled should have support for that particular file system. for eg : ext3 or xfs


I m not sure what did ur earlier emails mention about building the kernel.
