Hmmmm... On my system sqlplus under /usr/bin is a symbolic link to Oracle's 
sqlplus.
[root at hubble ~]# ls -l /usr/bin/sqlplus
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 43 Dec 10 17:00 /usr/bin/sqlplus -> 
/usr/lib/oracle/10.2.0.4/client/bin/sqlplus
which seems to want ORACLE_HOME to be set.  But it sounds like instantclient 
doesn't require it.
So I guess it depends on your Oracle installation.
