% Hmmmm... On my system sqlplus under /usr/bin is a symbolic link to Oracle's

Yes, this is the oracle instantclient I've been talking about.

% which seems to want ORACLE_HOME to be set.  But it sounds like 
% instantclient doesn't require it.
% So I guess it depends on your Oracle installation.
