I think Cliff is right with the XML file with data, perhaps an RSS feed might work?

There is a twitter feed for centos-announce ( http://twitter.com/centos_announce ), which I was going to look into using for my script, but didnt for some reason that i cant remember now.

Fedora has a bodhi instance running for all their updates, which might be something to look into as well...
